CNA Financial Q3 2026 Profit Falls Sharply on Catastrophe Losses
CNA Financial reported Q3 net income of $196M, down from $403M a year ago, as catastrophe losses and weaker underwriting weighed on results.
CNA Financial posted third-quarter 2026 net income of $196 million, or $0.72 per share, a steep decline from $403 million recorded in the same period a year earlier, the company announced. Core income, a measure that excludes certain investment gains and losses, came in at $203 million, or $0.75 per share, compared with $409 million in the prior-year quarter.
The company's property and casualty segment bore the brunt of the pressure, generating core income of $397 million against $456 million in the year-ago period. CNA attributed the P&C deterioration to a combination of lower underlying underwriting results and an elevated level of catastrophe losses, twin headwinds that have weighed on insurers broadly in recent quarters.

The Life & Group segment also factored into the overall earnings picture, though the P&C division remains the dominant driver of CNA's financial performance. The magnitude of the year-over-year decline — roughly half of prior-year net income — signals that catastrophe-related costs were a significant variable rather than a modest seasonal fluctuation.
The results highlight ongoing challenges for commercial property and casualty insurers as climate-related events and other large loss occurrences continue to pressure underwriting margins across the industry. Analysts tracking the sector have noted that catastrophe loss accumulation has become an increasingly consequential factor in quarterly earnings comparisons for multi-line carriers.
